I get messages all the time from women who feel less confident in their abilities to beautify their home. It’s scary to take the first step and often we fill unqualified to be a decorator (this couldn’t be farther from the truth my friends.)

So today, some talented decorators and I are going to share our home design ideas in a fun 3 part series. Decorating comes easy to some and not so easy to others. I definitely have fit into the ladder category. I have felt overwhelmed and unsure of myself when it came to committing something to my home. Nervous I would mess up and my home would be permanently damaged.  I would get so stressed and envious of other homes and wish I could “do what they could do.” I worked for years at getting better at taking care of my home, and now it’s a much easier process for me.  I know it can be for you as well.

Part One – Inspiration

Sometimes we don’t even know where to begin. When I was a little girl I would walk around Mervyn’s and dream about decorating my home. Later in college I would cut JC Penney catalog photos and glue them to my mood board in interior design class. But now we have the best mood board ever – it’s called Pinterest.

The invention of Pinterest has opened us up to worlds of ideas – only limited to how fast you can enter in your search idea. So if you are needing ideas, needing encouragement, needing inspiration – Pinterest is a great place to start.

When I moved into my current home, with it’s basic white floor plan, I had to completely change up my decorating style because my previous home was Tuscan style. I created different Pinterest boards for different rooms in my home. I added boards for wood walls, DIY projects, and backyard ideas. Over the course of a few months I had stockpiled quite a few pins of things that I loved. I started to notice a pattern of what I enjoyed.

Have you wondered what “style” you are in regards to home decorating? I sure did. I honestly didn’t even know what the difference was between styles and if you were “allowed” to have multiple favorites. There is actually more styles than I realized. DedorAid.com shares 20 design styles for 2019. Here are just a few:

• Contemporary
• Rustic
• Shabby Chic
• French Country
• Coastal
• Bohemian
• Modern Farmhouse
• Industrial

Amara.com goes into further detail of the styles in The LuxPad Definitive Guide found here. It’s a good read and very informative.  If you aren’t sure you what style you are, go take this quiz from Better Homes and Gardens here! Once you take the quiz and let me know what design style you are!

Now you are ready to start searching Pinterest for styles to focus on. Head to the search bar and type in things like “Bohemian Style Living Room” or “French Country Kitchens.” Lots of ideas will pop up and you can start adding to the boards you have made. You can add as many pins as you want, there is no limit!

Here is my example:

After looking at so many ideas I realized I was Farmhouse – Rustic – Industrial.  Mixing these design ideas were perfect for me. Shiplap and Joanna Gaines spoke to me in particularly. I pinned images according to rooms in my house, the sky was the limit. Even if I knew it was impossible to afford or make myself, I pinned it anyway. I wanted to build things and make projects. Secondly I fell in love with farmhouse decor items. Even though I knew I couldn’t buy them all, I pinned over 100 items that spoke to me, see that here. Finally, I was on a budget which meant I had to do a lot of the work myself. I had followed the Shanty2Chic sisters for years and loved their work. This board became one of my favorites.

I dreamed of shiplap walls. I had no idea how to do it or what it entailed. But I wanted it. So here are ideas that inspired me from that Pinterest board I had created (tap on photo to take you to creators website):

I had completed my first step – I was inspired! I had no idea how or what I was going to do, but I knew what I wanted.

So now I have some homework for you! I promise it will be fun.

1. Create a Pinterest page

2. Make 5 boards of areas in your home you would like ideas for

3. Take the interior design quiz here

4. Pin at least 10 pins per board

That’s it! So easy and so fun. You will start to get ideas swimming in your mind and they can get hard to shut off. Mine actually never do so send help my way!
