Installing Luxury Vinyl Flooring in your home gym floor by yourself can save you money and isn’t hard to do. It will take some planning and some manual labor, but is worth it when saving on the pocket book.

We turned our son’s room into a home gym last year that you can read about here. At the time we didn’t have the budget for new flooring, so we left the carpet in. Now we are ready to change that and share the step by step process.

Pick Out Your Luxury Vinyl Flooring

We chose the Washed Concrete Axel from the Maybree Collection because this is what they recommended for the basement floor. It is a rigid core floating luxury vinyl planks and marble-like tiles in gorgeous finishes. Supplies Needed for Installation

• Broom
• Level
• Knee pads (optional)
• Tape measurer
• Chalk line
• Spacers (for 1/8 inch. expansion gap)
• Pencil
• Utility knife or Guillotine style cutter to trim planks
• Framer’s square/Speed Square
• Pressure sensitive adhesive of your choice
• Hand saw, Jamb saw or oscillating multi-tool to undercut door jambs
• Luxury Vinyl Flooring
• Trim Pieces
• 6 mil Poly Sheeting

Preparing Your Subfloor

To get our floor ready, we had to remove the equipment as well as the carpet. This is easy to do and just requires an afternoon. We also listed our carpet on Facebook Marketplace and it sold quickly.

You will also remove baseboards and sweep the floor well before you start. We were able to leave in our initial baseboard at the top of the installation process, but needed to remove all the others. You can do this carefully so you can reuse the same boards when the flooring is installed. Now we are ready to install our luxury vinyl flooring.

Installing the Underlay Film

Since we have a basement and are installing over concrete, we took extra measures on the sub flooring. If there were any change in moisture with concrete flooring (which happens all the time in neighborhoods), the moisture would essentially be trapped between the rigid core flooring product and the concrete subfloor and could lead to mold growth. Therefore we installed an Underlay Film.

The recommended film to use is 6 mil poly sheeting before installing the flooring as a moisture barrier.  This is inexpensive and you lay this as you go. Grab some here if you need it.

Installing Luxury Vinyl Flooring

The Maybree NovaFloor Luxury Vinyl is simple to install. Read the directions before starting so you understand the process best.

You will start at the top left corner and move your way to the right. You will need to use a 3/8 or ½ inch expansion gap around the perimeter but can cover that gap with baseboard and their shim molding.

•

Each piece snaps together gently. You will use a mallet to ensure you do not smash the edges. You will literally hear the “snap” when it is secured properly.

We made sure to space out the tiles so they were staggered. Use your hand saw or miter saw to cut the tiles. Take time to cut corners properly and use your oscillating multi-tool to help remove door jams if needed.

Adding Vinyl Trim Pieces

NovaFloor offers a variety of transition trim pieces for your installation. Discuss what you need with your retail provider so they can order the exact amount for you. We used:

NST484-HDC (3N1/Slim Trim)

NST484-HDC-QR (Quarter Round)

They are simple to cut and install. Follow the directions to ensure proper installation.

We loved the way these transition pieces looked and helped with the flow of the carpet area to the gym vinyl floor.

Install Baseboards

Now is the time to touch up paint and install your baseboards. We used our previous baseboards to save on our budget. This went quickly and we moved equipment in. It looks so amazing!!
