Raised in California and transplanted to Utah. Married my college sweetheart from Montana, and we are raising 4 nuggets together. I love all things DIY projects and doing them on a budget. I don’t mind messing up and am ok with the 90/10 rule - nothing is perfect over here and it’s fine by me! Encouraging all ‘wanna-be’ DIYers to just get out there and try it! You will be so glad you did.”
If you’ve been around here for a while, you already know my husband Mike is obsessed with Harry Potter. I’m talking road trips with Harry Potter audiobooks, endless rewatches of the movies, and the kind of fan who notices when you mispronounce “Wingardium Leviosa.” He has the wand, the mugs, the T-shirts… it’s a whole thing.
So when he stumbled across a video of this magical floating-candle cloud ceiling last year, he didn’t just “think about it.” Oh no, he ordered every single supply from my Amazon shop before I even knew what was happening.
We spent one afternoon putting it together on our front porch for Halloween, and by that night… the trick-or-treaters lost their minds. People were stopping in the street to take pictures, parents were pulling out their phones, and Mike stood there with his wand looking like he’d just been accepted to Hogwarts.
The best part? This project went viral on Instagram because it looks like it took a movie prop team to make… but it’s surprisingly simple. And once you do it, you can roll it up and reuse it every single year.
Everything you need is linked in my Harry Potter Halloween Decor List so you don’t have to hunt around.
Spread your sheet out and measure the space you’re decorating. Our porch ceiling is long, so I left extra fabric on the edges to make loops for hanging. Don’t stress about getting it perfect, the “clouds” will hide any uneven edges.
Peel off the adhesive backing and stick the lights directly onto the sheet in zigzag patterns. Think lightning bolts, not straight lines. There’s no perfect formula here, the goal is to make it look random and whimsical. And anyway, you won’t see these lines through the sheet and clouds once we are finished.
Kelly Tip: Keep the lights in one continuous strand so you don’t have to deal with multiple battery packs or plugs.
Turn the sheet over so the lights face down. Spray a small section with Gorilla adhesive and press polyfill stuffing into place. Don’t overthink the shape, lumps and dips make it more realistic. We used two small bags to cover our sheet.
Kelly Tip: You can always add more clouds once it’s up and in place if it looks uneven.

Stick your outdoor 3M hooks to the ceiling where you want the candles to float. Tie fishing line to each candle at varying lengths for a layered effect. We used both short and tall candles for variety.
This is the question I get most: How do you hang it?
We cut two small, parallel slits (about an inch long) to make a loop in the sheet. Slide the loop over the hook and let it hang. Repeat across the ceiling until the whole thing is up.
Hook the fishing line from each candle onto the same hooks holding the sheet. The candles will dangle below the clouds and glow against the backdrop of the lights.

Turn off your porch lights, switch on the rope lights and candles, and play the Harry Potter soundtrack through a Bluetooth speaker. Trust me, the music changes everything.
Once your floating candle cloud ceiling is up, you get to decide the vibe. You can totally keep it as-is; spooky, magical, and just a hint of Harry Potter. Or… you can lean all the way in and turn your porch into a full-on Hogwarts welcome.
If you want to go big, here are some fun ideas:
Whether you keep it subtle or go all out, it’s going to be unforgettable.

For our porch, here’s what we spent:
Total: Around $75, and worth every penny for the reaction we got. PLUS we can reuse it every year.
This isn’t just decor. It’s an experience. The kids lit up (pun intended), neighbors stopped to admire it, and Mike… well, he got to live his best Hogwarts life right on our porch.
And the best part? Now it’s part of our Halloween tradition. Every October we get to take out the sheet, the lights, and the soundtrack.
When Halloween’s over, gently unhook the sheet, candles, and lights. Roll the sheet (cloud side in) to keep the polyfill clean. Store the candles separately so they don’t tangle. Next year, just unroll and hang, it’ll look as magical as the first time.
Small Porch Space? Do a mini version over your doorway or inside your entryway.
Budget-Friendly Tip: Use fewer candles but place them in the most visible spots.
Windy Area? Use extra hooks and slightly shorter fishing line to keep candles from swinging too much.

Make your porch the one everyone remembers this Halloween. A little light, a little cloud, and a whole lot of magic, you’ve got this friend!
We used battery-operated candles and fishing line to create the floating effect. The fishing line is tied to the candles and hung from 3M hooks so they look suspended in midair. You can find the exact candles and line we used in my Amazon shop.
We cut small slits in a white sheet to make loops, then hooked them onto outdoor 3M hooks. This method keeps it secure and easy to take down and reuse next year.
Absolutely! Just swap outdoor hooks for removable indoor hooks and make sure your lights are safe for indoor use.
It took us about two hours from start to finish, but that included plenty of snack breaks and “wand practice” from my husband. If you’re focused, you could have it up in under 90 minutes.
Ours cost around $75 in total, but you can reuse it every year. The main items are the LED rope lights, polyfill stuffing, battery candles, and adhesive hooks. All are linked in my Amazon Halloween Decor List.
Yes! We set our strip lights to rainbow for a fun lightening effects, but you could go green for Slytherin, red for Gryffindor, or even purple for a more haunted look.
