A few years ago we tore out our carpet on the main floor and added laminate flooring from Select Surfaces (sold exclusively at Sam’s Club) and we have absolutely loved it – you can watch that process here. It has held up so well with no warping or scratches, even with all the teenagers in the house. So now we are adding the same flooring into Mikes office and I am sharing the process with you! Here is our simple guide to installing laminate flooring. And you can watch the full video process here.
Laminate flooring is a popular choice for homeowners seeking a durable, stylish, and easy-to-maintain flooring option. Select Surfaces is our favorite choice because of its amazing price point (starting at $1.99 a square foot) and its SpeedLoc™ system ensures easy and secure plank assembly during installation. Additionally, it has SpillDefense™ technology that makes it waterproof for 24 hours. I always say that installing flooring is simple, but takes time, and the money you save by doing it yourself is totally worth it. Plus this product comes with a limited lifetime residential warranty and a limited 25-year commercial warranty.
Installing laminate flooring might seem like a daunting task, but with the right tools and a clear understanding of the process, it can be a satisfying DIY project. In this step-by-step guide, we’ll walk you through the installation process of Select Surfaces laminate flooring to help you achieve a professional-looking result.
Before you start the installation process, make sure you have the following materials and tools on hand:

Tools:
Ensure that the subfloor is clean, dry, and level. If needed, use a self-leveling compound to correct any uneven areas. Lay down a moisture barrier if your subfloor requires one.
Allow the Select Surfaces laminate flooring to acclimate in the room for at least 48 hours before installation. This helps the planks adjust to the humidity and temperature of the space.
Installation is made simpler with the pre-attached backer, saving both time and money. Therefore, there is no need to install underlayment with this product.
Measure the room’s length and width to determine the starting point for the installation. It’s crucial to plan so that the final row of planks isn’t too narrow. Use spacers to maintain an expansion gap around the perimeter of the room.
Begin installing the first row of planks along the longest wall, with the tongue side facing the wall. We always start going left to right. With the SpeedLoc™ system, you do not need a malot to hammer in the pieces, then will be fine with just your hand pressure.
You also want to make sure you are staggering the pieces so it looks more natural.
Continue installing the planks, interlocking the tongue and groove edges. Use the circular saw or miter saw to cut planks as needed, ensuring a staggered pattern for a more natural look.
Install transition molding in doorways or where the laminate flooring meets another type of flooring. Secure the molding in place using finishing nails. We also added an accent wall with MDF shiplap boards and painted them black.
Complete the installation by attaching the final row of planks. Double-check for any gaps or uneven areas, making adjustments as necessary. What do you think?! We love how it turned out!
With careful planning and attention to detail, anyone can installing Select Surfaces laminate flooring and it can be a rewarding DIY project. Mike is so happy with his updated office space!
