Raised in California and transplanted to Utah. Married my college sweetheart from Montana, and we are raising 4 nuggets together. I love all things DIY projects and doing them on a budget. I don’t mind messing up and am ok with the 90/10 rule - nothing is perfect over here and it’s fine by me! Encouraging all ‘wanna-be’ DIYers to just get out there and try it! A weekend in Southern Utah hits different…
I’ve said that about a lot of trips, but this one earned it. My daughter and I gave ourselves a few days of red rock, a boutique, a massage, one incredible show under the stars, and then we drove to Las Vegas and screamed our way through a Backstreet Boys concert like it was 1999. Different landscapes. Deeper conversations. A weekend we’ll never forget.
Here is exactly what we did, in case you want to steal the whole thing with this digital itinerary.

We based the trip at the Villas at Movara in Ivins, about fifteen minutes from downtown St. George. Modern, spacious, and the perfect home base for a weekend that was half adventure and half doing absolutely nothing. That combination is harder to find than it sounds. Most places make you pick one.
What sold me was having room to spread out. We’d come back from a hike dusty and starving, and instead of stepping over each other in a hotel room we had actual space to shower, and sit outside while the light went orange on the rocks.
We kicked the weekend off with a hike in Snow Canyon, and it is still one of our favorite spots in the area. Red rock, black lava flows, petrified sand dunes you can walk right out onto. It looks like three different planets stacked on top of each other and it’s all within a few miles of the road.

Go early or go late. That is the whole tip. The middle of the day out here is brutal and the parking lots at the popular trailheads fill up fast. We went in the evening and got that gold light coming across everything, which is the light you actually want to be standing in. There’s a per-vehicle day-use fee at the entrance, so check the current rate on the Utah State Parks site before you go.
If you do one thing on this list, do this one. Tuacahn Amphitheatre sits in Padre Canyon with red rock cliffs standing behind the stage, and watching Les Misérables there, outside, under the stars, was one of those nights you know you’re going to talk about for years. The production, the setting, the whole experience was absolutely amazing. Grab tickets here.
It rained on us. The crew came out with squeegees and pushed the water off the stage, half the amphitheater pulled on ponchos, and the show went on anyway. Honestly it made the night better.

A few things I wish someone had told me. It’s an open-air theater, so it can be warm walking in and genuinely cold by the second act. Bring a layer even if it feels ridiculous. Throw a poncho in your bag. Get there early enough to park and walk up without rushing, and give yourself a minute in the canyon before the lights go down. And book ahead, because their seasons sell out.
We gave ourselves one full day with nothing on the schedule. We shopped the boutique, got massages, walked through the Pilates studio with the cactus sitting right outside those big windows, and mostly just sat around in robes in the quiet. It’s the kind of place where you stop checking your phone without deciding to.
I did damage in that boutique and I regret nothing. A suede shoulder bag, an orange UTAH hat, a stack of tees, and a sweater that I have not put down since.

This was the day the trip turned into something more than a trip. You can travel with someone for days and talk about logistics the entire time. Sitting still is what actually gets you to the real conversations. Relax, recharge, repeat.
We closed the weekend out in Las Vegas seeing the Backstreet Boys at the Sphere and it was so much fun! We made friends from Movara and uur whole group was on their feet the entire time. Still fangirling.
I had heard people talk about the Sphere and I still was not ready. The screen wraps all the way around and over you, so you are not really watching a stage, you are standing inside whatever they decide to build around you. Add five guys you have been listening to since high school and it is a lot of feelings for one night.

The drive is easier than people expect. St. George to Las Vegas is about 120 miles straight down I-15, right through the Virgin River Gorge, and it takes under two hours if traffic cooperates. Just remember Nevada is an hour behind Utah, so build that into your show night.
I get asked about this every single trip, so I rounded up the things I actually reached for. The soft water flask that squished into my pack, the visor, the gold sandals I lived in the second the shoes came off, and the jacket I was so glad I brought to Tuacahn. It’s all in my Amazon storefront here: grab the link.

Here’s the whole weekend in one place, if you want to screenshot it and go.
Different landscapes. Deeper conversations. If you’ve been putting off a trip with your daughter, or your mom, or your best friend, this is the one to book.
