Raised in California and transplanted to Utah. Married my college sweetheart from Montana, and we are raising 4 nuggets together. I love all things DIY projects and doing them on a budget. I don’t mind messing up and am ok with the 90/10 rule - nothing is perfect over here and it’s fine by me! Encouraging all ‘wanna-be’ DIYers to just get out there and try it! You will be so glad you did.”
Who is ready for school to start? My son is headed back to college and we are partnering with The Home Depot to showcase how easy it is to create the perfect college dorm room straight from their website and app. The Home Depot is more than a hardware store; they have endless furniture and decor options online that can be delivered straight to your door.
When creating a space for his college dorm room, there were a few things we were looking for:
Shopping The Home Depot app and website is a great option for a college student; there are a lot of products online and you can choose to ship to the store or straight to your door. This is great for students who do not have transportation. Everything we picked was able to be delivered quickly too! Watch our shopping experience here.
This is the bedroom that we are working with:
As we chose the bed area, we opted for a taller padded headboard that he can sit up against for late night reading. Additionally, we wanted to make sure there was room underneath the bed for storage. The mattress is perfect for a college student because it is shipped in a box and is easy to carry up and down flights of stairs. Here is what we got:
This space is crucial for a college student. There are so many desk and chair options on the website that can fit any budget. We wanted a desk that Mikey could use for years to come, but still fit within his budget. He also wanted drawers to use for storage and a mini fridge for food and snacks. Here is what we found:
Not all college dorm rooms will have space for a sitting area. Last year Mikey’s did not have any extra space. However, this year he has a bigger apartment and we were able to create a nook for him to study in and have visitors. Once again, there are so many options to choose from depending on your budget and style. Since Mikey will be in this spot for a few years, we got items that will carry him through these years and more.
Storage is the number one issue college students have; there is never enough room! We measured out his area and figured out different ways to maximize his space. He loves rock climbing, mountain biking and fishing, and generally stores his equipment in his car. But this shelf unit and peg board were perfect for all his “toys” and he calls it his “Adventure Wall.” We even used 3M Command Strips so that we did not have to put holes in the walls.
This is the best part! We picked a day to open all the boxes and set up his space. It was such a fun experience as a momma to do this with him. We added Peel and Stick Wallpaper to one wall as an accent (and to cover up wall marks that were already there) and it took us just 30 minutes to make such an impact. This Grey Poplin Textured paper by NuWallpaper looks so good in here! I love how his college dorm room turned out!
You can get some many things that you need for any student at The Home Depot App and it ships straight to their door, so even if you aren’t there to help, they can set it up on their own. We are so excited for him to start his second year of college and he is completely ready to go!!
