Raised in California and transplanted to Utah. Married my college sweetheart from Montana, and we are raising 4 nuggets together. I love all things DIY projects and doing them on a budget. I don’t mind messing up and am ok with the 90/10 rule - nothing is perfect over here and it’s fine by me! Encouraging all ‘wanna-be’ DIYers to just get out there and try it! You will be so glad you did.”
This wall is right next to the front door and has become our backpack area. I added coat racks a few feet apart so we can utilize the space better. For this project we will be using a circular saw and a cordless drill. Follow along on how to build a coat rack below!
I recommend the RYOBI 18V One+ HP Brushless Cordless 7-Tool Combo Kit because it is an amazing kit for the price. It includes 7 tools, 2 batteries, charger, bag and accessories and you can pick it up from The Home Depot here. Another bonus with this kit is that it runs on RYOBI 18V ONE+ Battery, which will work on 225+ ONE+ Tools.

Your first step is to measure and prep the wall that you are adding your coat rack too. Grab your measuring tape and measure the length you are wanting the rack. I chose to add two racks. Then you will grab your stud sensor and measure for the studs in the walls. Mark these with a pencil.
Take the measurement that you made from the wall and mark your 1×3 pine board. You can also use a 1×3 primed MDF board if you choose. Draw a straight on your board with your level. Then you will make the cut with your circular saw. Make sure you use eye protection before you start.
If you have never used a circular saw, I suggest you take a piece of scrap wood and practice first. You can watch this video here on The Home Depot page to watch a tutorial on circular saw usage. Work slow, follow your line, and steady your board with your other hand (but make sure to keep it clear as well).
I chose to sand down my edges before I painted my board. Matching your paint to your baseboards (if you need this) is easy and they can do this at The Home Depot Paint Center. I painted two coats of paint and primer on my board and let it dry.
Now it’s time to hand your board. Find your marked studs on the wall and this is where you will mount your board. Since this coat rack will be holding lots of weight, you want it to be as strong as possible. If you do not have a stud to drill into, then use the drywall anchors.
The RYOBI 18V Cordless Drill is the perfect tool for this job. Place the board on the wall, use your level to make sure it is exactly straight, then start to drill your 2 inch screw into the board. It will pass through the board and into the drywall. My board was 2 feet long so I added two screws into the drywall.
The last part is to add your hooks. These will sit on top of the 1×3 board. Space out how many you would like and where you want them. I chose to have them cover the anchor screws.
This coat rack is complete and it was such an easy project. I love how it helps our kids have more space to hang their coats and backpacks. The RYOBI + HP Brushless Cordless 7-Tool Combo Kit is such a great set that prepares you for many great DIY projects, just like this one! I hope you like this simple tutorial on how to build your own coat rack.
