With a few simples steps and a handful of inexpensive pieces, anyone can do Christmas Tree Decorating on a budget.

Christmas tree decorating does not have to cost a lot of money or take a lot of time to accomplish. I promise.

I am sharing 5 simple steps on how I decorate my Christmas tree each season (and stay in budget) and hope this helps give you ideas this season.

Christmas Tree Size and Shape

You can get a fresh tree at your local hardware store, cutting it down with a permit, or shopping for a faux tree. Your best deals for a faux tree will be after Christmas sales or Black Friday.

I used a 7 foot semi-slim tree that was pre-lit from Tree Classics, but they have since turned from public to wholesale. Here is a few good budget pre-lit Christmas trees for ya:

Find a space to set it up and space out the branches to make them look fuller. Additionally make sure the lights are working!

Colorful Wired Ribbon

Ribbon is an inexpensive way to fill up a tree when decorating. Once again, buying ribbon during after Christmas sales will save you 50%-90% off your spools. Make to use WIRED RIBBON so it will keep its shape as you decorate.

I like to use 2-3 different colors of ribbon for my trees. You can find 10 yard wired ribbon spools for around $10, but if they are on clearance then even better!

I always add my base ribbon first, it fills the tree quickly with color and there are lots of ways to use it. I chose the “waterfall method” for this tree, where you start at the top and drape it down in 1 foot sections.

To hook the ribbon onto the tree, pinch the one foot strip and wrap a wired tree branch around it. Try to grab a branch closer to the center. Repeat this step all the way down the tree, then do this 3 or 5 more times around the tree.

Natural Picks and Stems

Picks and stems can really add a lot of texture and style to your tree. You don’t need a lot to make a big statement. I would stick with odd numbers when adding picks to your tree.

Picks are really sturdy and often bendable. So you can get really creative with your placement.

You will space them around the tree, making sure the stem of the pick is driven into the branches of the tree. This will secure it. You can also tie with with wire.

Grabbing picks at the end of the season to use for the next year will ensure you get some great deals! Here are some online picks that I like:

I will usually grab two different styles of picks for my tree, but making sure they are the same color pallet as the rest of my tree.

Various Ornaments

Ornaments can get really costly, sometimes ranging from $5-$20 a piece. If you buy them in bulk boxes, this will cut your costs. And of course, grabbing them during after Christmas sales will save you even more.

I like to pick plastic ones so the chances of them breaking is smaller. Save the box that they come in for easier packing. Here is some deals that I found on bulk ornaments:

Hang them on different branched and on different levels.

There is no right or wrong way to do it! I also added some bows from wired ribbon to the tree to add more depth. They look like ornaments too!

Tree Skirt

For the final touch I adds to my Christmas tree is a tree skirt to match. This can range from a professionally made one, to burlap bunched at the bottom.

I grabbed a soft gold tone, but have a few I can change up each year depending on where I place my tree. Here are a few good deals I found on Christmas tree skirts:

It only took about about an hour to get this baby up and looking complete. I love how simple and easy this was to do. Shopping in bulk and finding year end sales also helped me stay in a budget. I save all the decorations and they will last me years to come!
