We have had the same bed for over 8 years (a hand-me-down from my Aunt and we have been so grateful for it, but it was time for a big kid bed). We wanted an “as healthy as possible” option because my allergies are the worst. We found out about the Real Bed Company and are so exciting to be partnering with them to show you how easy it is to get this bed to your home, especially during this “self-isolation” period we are all in.
The Real Bed Company has some amazing qualities that drew me in. It has all natural certified organic materials, you can order online and it is shipped to your door, they donate to a No Kill Animal Shelter, and have a 100 night trial commitment. Plus they have been rated as the “Best Mattress for Couples Under $1000” on the Today Show. Can you see why I was so excited to get mine? Serious good qualities!
Once we ordered our mattress we waited for it arrive – and it came fast! I wasn’t sure how they would really ship a king mattress in a box, but I was pleasantly surprised. But be warned, it is heavy! Mike and I had to lift it together to get it onto our box spring. We cut the main bag that sealed it tight and it unfolded onto the bed. I would for sure recommend having it in place before cutting the seal so you don’t have to move it again.
Once we took off the entire plastic packaging, it inflated well and took its shape. It takes a little bit to be fully formed, but it was worth the wait. This thing is soft and comfortable. The springs are strong (I forgot to mention this is not a memory foam bed) and flexible.
We had a fun time setting it up and were so happy to have a new bed. After 21 years of marriage we will like we are adults now! If you are interested in a Real Bed you can use our coupon code CITYGIRL for a $50 discount too. Head here to check them out.

When springtime rolls around I start to get the itch for freshness, and new linens for my bedroom is always a must. It helps me get excited for sunshine and feels like a new start. I am excited to share this master bedroom refresh with you today.
I love comfy sheets and always try to find soft ones that are 100% cotton and will fit my deep mattress. I ordered some from California Design Den and I loved them. They were a great price point and had very deep pockets, which was perfect. You can find them here.
I washed them and got them all fitted. I ordered the straight white set for a King bed. They are Pure Natural 100% Cotton and fade resistant. This helps us to stay cool while we sleep.
I also added a small spring bench to the foot of my bed from Kirkland’s. This is one of my favorite home decor stores and I loved the new spring line they launched. The bench is called the Blue Striped Bench with Rope-Wrapped Legs.
Once the sheets arrived and were fitted, I realized I would like a lighter quilt for the spring as well. The creme one was beautiful but pretty heavy. I asked around and a girlfriend told me about the company Kasentex. She loved how lightweight and soft her set was when it arrived.
We will discuss how each of us find our inspiration, how we take it from dream to realization, and finally how we make it come true – implementation.
Decorating spaces can be difficult when you do not know where to start. This is the last post of a three part series I have written (with some amazing other bloggers) to help you find simple ways to decorate your spaces. After INSPIRATION and REALIZATION, it is now time for IMPLEMENTATION. Make sure to check out each of these blogs and the amazing tips they share. Each image is pinnable to save to your Pinterest page as well!
I have discussed ways to find your design style and how utilizing Pinterest can give us tons of inspiration (read that post here). Then I offered ideas on how to find exactly WHAT you want and HOW to make it possible (read that post here). Finally, I am sharing ideas of gaining the courage to actually implement the decorations you have dreamed of.
Now that you know WHAT project you can afford to do, it’s time to figure out the exact things you NEED to make it happen. If you are not used to doing DIY projects, I would recommend finding a blog who has already done your project and given step by step instructions on how to do it. This will be extremely helpful and give you confidence. Some of the blogs I love are:
Shanty2Chic – This is my number one go to blog for DIY projects
It is hard to work on a project 5 minutes here and five minutes there. It can be done but it does make it more stressful. I like to plan a day that I am able to focus my energy completely to getting the job done. It is usually when kids leave for school, and I stop working when they get home. Often I keep working on it once they go to bed.
Are you ready to go? You have done all the prep work and now it’s time to make or build your project. You might be nervous, but you don’t need to be. Mistakes along the way are the best learning opportunity. Most of my DIY projects have “issues”. I don’t care, I learned something with each “issue” I had. And it made me a better builder. Almost anything can be fixed my friends!
Gather all your tools and supplies in one place
Make sure you have "messy" clothes on so they can get dirty
Have all of your directions ready
Don't rush the project - take your time
Ask for help if you need it
Youtube can be your best buddy
Safety Notes: If you are doing something with the electrical wall jack, make sure you turn the power off. Always unplug your power tools when you are not using them. Always wear safety goggles. Cover your carpet before you paint. And stop if you are frustrated. You can always go back in when you are ready. Getting frustrated usually makes for a messy project. These are all things I learned the hard way my friends!
Now just get started. Make the first cut. Paint the first wall. Nail the first piece of trim. YOU GOT THIS.
Once your are done, celebrate! You should be so proud of yourself!
Step Four – Decorate It
This is the funnest part! Once again, this can also be overwhelming. Make sure you go back to your Pinterest boards and get the inspiration you need. Your budget may have dwindled by now, and I do not believe decorations need to be expensive!
FIRST THINGS FIRST – Shop Your Home. What do you have in your home that can be moved around or put somewhere else? Try fiddling with the decor you have and see if it is enough to make a difference. Feel free to find a photo and copy it. There is no copyright to decorating! That is why decorators share their ideas, so that we all can benefit. I often do this with a mantel or small area. Once I copy the image, I then can move pieces around to make it my own. It’s a great first step.
If you do need to shop for a few things, I am adding my favorite budget shops for you to check out. I always SELL BEFORE I BUY. Meaning, I get rid of things in my home and sell them on social media before I go out shopping. It makes your new items basically free!
A Christian owned thrift store, all over the country
Antique or Thrift Stores
Be careful because some stores are way over priced
They have so many deals on home decor and free shipping
They have higher prices but when you have the 30% off coupon and get Kohls Cash, it’s a good deal
Ross Dress for Less and TJ Max
They get great decor in all the time (Ross is usually cheaper than TJ Max, but more picked over)
Joann or Michaels
I always use my 40% off coupon on their apps when I shop (they have tons of fun home decor)
They have really great sales and you get coupons if you sign up for their newsletter
RC Willey Clearance Center
If you have an RC Willey by you, see if they have a clearance center – their prices are so awesome!
They have such good deals on furniture, wood flooring and appliances – with the best return policy ever!
Once you are all done, stand back and admire your work. You did it. You figured it out. I hope you like what you see. Often I will close my eyes and open them again just to see my work. Then I walk away and then turn around really fast to see it again! Decorating and creating can bring so much satisfaction to your soul. I hope you are proud of yourself! Send me photos so I can see your work too!
PS – Need more ideas on how to create an entire room in 6 weeks? Come read my One Room Challenge Project from last year, and see how I got from this:
I get messages all the time from women who feel less confident in their abilities to beautify their home. It’s scary to take the first step and often we fill unqualified to be a decorator (this couldn’t be farther from the truth my friends.)
So today, some talented decorators and I are going to share our home design ideas in a fun 3 part series. Are you ready to get some simple ideas to gain confidence in how to turn your home into a place you love to be!? Let’s do this! And don’t forget to head to each of my homegirls listed above to see their guide to creating spaces as well!
Tips for todays post – pin all the images you want to your Pinterest page for future reference. And make sure to head to all five of these amazing blog posts and mark your calendars for Part 2 of this series!
Decorating comes easy to some and not so easy to others. I definitely have fit into the ladder category. I have felt overwhelmed and unsure of myself when it came to committing something to my home. Nervous I would mess up and my home would be permanently damaged. I would get so stressed and envious of other homes and wish I could “do what they could do.” I worked for years at getting better at taking care of my home, and now it’s a much easier process for me. I know it can be for you as well.
Here’s what do expect from our Complete Guide to Creating Spaces Series:
Part One: Inspiration – February 6
Part Two: Realization – February 13
Part Three: Implementation – February 20
We will discuss how each of us find our inspiration, how we take it from dream to realization, and finally how we make it come true – implementation.
Part One – Inspiration
Sometimes we don’t even know where to begin. When I was a little girl I would walk around Mervyn’s and dream about decorating my home. Later in college I would cut JC Penney catalog photos and glue them to my mood board in interior design class. But now we have the best mood board ever – it’s called Pinterest.
The invention of Pinterest has opened us up to worlds of ideas – only limited to how fast you can enter in your search idea. So if you are needing ideas, needing encouragement, needing inspiration – Pinterest is a great place to start.
If you do not have an account – sign up here. If you don’t know how to create boards – learn about that here. This is your starting point.
When I moved into my current home, with it’s basic white floor plan, I had to completely change up my decorating style because my previous home was Tuscan style. I created different Pinterest boards for different rooms in my home. I added boards for wood walls, DIY projects, and backyard ideas. Over the course of a few months I had stockpiled quite a few pins of things that I loved. I started to notice a pattern of what I enjoyed.
Have you wondered what “style” you are in regards to home decorating? I sure did. I honestly didn’t even know what the difference was between styles and if you were “allowed” to have multiple favorites. There is actually more styles than I realized. DedorAid.com shares 20 design styles for 2019. Here are just a few:
Amara.com goes into further detail of the styles in The LuxPad Definitive Guide found here. It’s a good read and very informative. If you aren’t sure you what style you are, go take this quiz from Better Homes and Gardens here! Once you take the quiz and let me know what design style you are!
Now you are ready to start searching Pinterest for styles to focus on. Head to the search bar and type in things like “Bohemian Style Living Room” or “French Country Kitchens.” Lots of ideas will pop up and you can start adding to the boards you have made. You can add as many pins as you want, there is no limit!
Here is my example:
After looking at so many ideas I realized I was Farmhouse – Rustic – Industrial. Mixing these design ideas were perfect for me. Shiplap and Joanna Gaines spoke to me in particularly. I pinned images according to rooms in my house, the sky was the limit. Even if I knew it was impossible to afford or make myself, I pinned it anyway. I wanted to build things and make projects. Want to see what that board ended up looking like? Click here to see!
Secondly I fell in love with farmhouse decor items. Even though I knew I couldn’t buy them all, I pinned over 100 items that spoke to me, see that here. Finally, I was on a budget which meant I had to do a lot of the work myself. I had followed the Shanty2Chic sisters for years and loved their work. This board became one of my favorites.
I dreamed of shiplap walls. I had no idea how to do it or what it entailed. But I wanted it. So here are ideas that inspired me from that Pinterest board I had created (tap on photo to take you to creators website):
This post is in paid partnership with Zircon Corporation. All opinions are my own and I only collaborate with companies that I use myself in my projects. I hope these links help you as you learn and grow!
Oh how I love Board and Batten Walls! My very first attempt was on my 40th birthday – all I wanted was to learn how to use a nail gun from Mr. Farmboy. I felt so empowered after that day and a woodworking “She-Ra” was released. Later on, I completed a full Board and Batten Wall in my son’s room – all by myself. You can read all about here – it was an exciting project for me.
So, today I am back at it and partnering with @ZirconTools to bring you a super simple DIY tutorial on how to make a Board and Batten Halfway Wall. Yes, I made up that title! Mr. Farmboy came up with the idea of only going up three-fourth the way up the wall and I loved it – hence this project was born.
Check out these before and after photos and watch my full DIY Youtube Tutorial here. Now come follow along and learn how to do this easy project that anyone can do!
I love all these farmhouse signs being sold right now – they are so beautiful! I had this vacant wall that needed filling and I was too impatient to order one and wait… Do you ever get that way? When you want something decorated and you want it done NOW! So I racked my brain with what materials I had and came up with this. And I love it. It’s not perfect, has some wrinkles and mismatched wood – but for my farmhouse room I was redecorating it was just right for me.
So if you love farmhouse signs and want to make your own – you can do it! The best part is this whole project will cost you under $15 – for a huge sign. Ready to see how?

I am always on the hunt for any possible solution to refinish furniture without sanding – anybody with me?! I launched into Google to see what new ideas came to my mind, and I came across Country Chic Paint and fell in love. Lets face it – I was sold just on their name. But as I read their blog I was smitten by their drive for environmental safe & VOC free paints – with their lab results to prove it!
VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) are gases that are released into the air from ordinary products such as paint, cleaning products, furniture, flooring, and cosmetics. They can produce short term health effects, with additional long term affect research still taking place.
Plane and simple? I don’t want my headboard contaminated with anything funky. So, needless to say, I couldn’t wait for my shipment to arrive.
Here is my 60 second video tutorial on my headboard project using Country Chic Paint. Then stick around and check out all the details behind this amazing stuff!
